Caustic ingestion

Caustic ingestion
Caustic ingestion is most common in children between the ages of one and three years old. A caustic substance refers to any substance that is able to burn or injure tissue. Common examples include household products like drain cleaners and bleach. When these substances are ingested, they can cause damage to any tissue they touch, including the lips, oesophagus and stomach. Some symptoms include pain, vomiting and coughing. If your child swallows a caustic substance, it is important to seek medical help immediately. Dr Thiebaut will perform an endoscopy to assess the oesophagus and stomach for any burns and to check the severity of the damage. She will then advise on the best treatment plan depending on the findings.
