Vesico-ureteric reflux (VUR)

Vesico-ureteric reflux (VUR)
Paediatric vesico-ureteric reflux is a condition characterised by urine refluxing from the bladder back into the ureters. In cases where the urine is infected or the reflux is severe, permanent damage to the kidneys can occur. Antenatal ultrasound showing enlarged kidneys and ureters are often suspicious of VUR and warrants further investigation following birth. The diagnosis is confirmed using a special X-ray study, and kidney function is assessed by means of an isotopic nuclear study. Medical and surgical intervention will be influenced by the findings of these investigations.
