Gallbladder and bile ducts
Diseases affecting the gallbladder and bile ducts can be in the form of infection, obstruction or inflammation. The gallbladder is located under the liver and is responsible for storage of bile. Gallstones in children are uncommon. Children who are obese, or have a family history of blood disease or problems are at increased risk.
Gallstones typically present with pain in the right upper abdomen, which often gets worse after eating. The diagnosis of gallstones is confirmed with ultrasound, and if symptomatic will require resection of the gallbladder.
