Foreign body ingestion
It is common for young children to put strange objects, like toys, coins and buttons into their mouths. In most cases, small items will pass through the intestine without causing any damage, but when these foreign bodies become stuck, it is important that they are removed before they cause damage. Dr Thiebaut will request an X-ray to identify the object and to see where it is lodged. All impacted foreign bodies will require removal. In most cases this can be achieved endoscopically, but in rare instances open surgery may be required. If your child swallows a sharp or metal object (in particular lithium battery or magnet/s) or if your child shows symptoms of an object lodged in the oesophagus (such as drooling, pain on swallowing), it is important to consult with your doctor immediately.
